The project aims to explore the socio-political dimension of sound and listening in urban space as a mode of sharing and cohabitation and the intertwining of sound, space and movement in a situated context. It seeks to engage with the place and its inhabitants through a shared reflection on the sonic environment in order to achieve a deep and multiple understanding of what the fabric of the place is - including its frictions and conflicts and what it might eventually become.

ABOUT

Can a collective practice based on sound and listening contribute to the understanding of living together within an urban area? Can it reflect differently on a neighbourhood as a shared space and engage with the dynamics of a local area, including its frictions and conflicts but also its potentials? And if so, what could possibly organize and maintain such a practice?

The sound research project “Confluences” seeks to look for new correspondences between sound, space and bodies. Using sound investigation and action as primary tools, our intention is to build a working methodology that moves away from the common approach, that  favours analytical observation and categorisation and therefore translates into divisions and dualisms, but to orient ourselves towards a “thinking-by-the-milieu”, which cultivates different forms of collaborative interaction and experiential forms of knowledge in a constant "flow of participation".

Our research aims to gather different approaches to sound and listening: sound walks, sonic mapping of urban space, recording and listening sessions, sound performances, conversations and activities that will  involve the inhabitants of the area.

Giulia Vismara

Born in Venice, living in Brussels. She is an electroacoustic composer and researcher. Her main concern is the organic nature of sound and the development of textures which combine concrete and synthetic elements. Space is the key to her work, the matrix that shapes the music as well as the sounds she composes. Through her research she explores "space" as a concept in various contexts, such as architecture, urban space, technology and composition, and how we can perceive it through sound. For this reason, she uses different methods of spatialization and 3D audio diffusion approaches.

Franziska Windisch

lives and works in Brussels. Her work moves between performance, text, composition and installation. She composes scores for performative acts which interrogate notions of trace, medium, sound and listening and which she then incorporates in linguistic, sculptural and installative arrangements. Situations that illustrate transformative processes and have unforeseen or irreversible results are key to her artistic practice.
